Joel Meyerowitz, Robert Shore. Thames & Hudson, (224p) ISBN: 9780500297896. Photography, read 10/08/25, Paperback ★★★★★
I got this at the end of last year at Christmas and have got around to reading it at last, which is very strange as Meyerowitz is one of the main influencers in my own practice.
This book is the discussion and exploration of when, in the 60s and 70s, Meyerowitz looked seriously at the use of colour in photography when the art and photography world only acknowledged black and white photography as worthy of consideration.
Colour photography was for amateurs.
Meyerowitz didn’t know this when he picked up a camera and started taking photographs and eventually, when he did find out about this, started taking two cameras with him everywhere, one loaded with colour and one loaded with black and white film.
This book is about that exploration, where Meyerowitz would take a picture with colour then black and white and evaluate the ‘truth’ of the statement about black and white and colour photography.
An interesting journey through his practice and thought process with lots of photographs that juxtaposed these two methods and what his conclusions finally were.
An excellent read and addition to any photography library
