Rabbit Test and Other Stories

Picked this up as one of my first books returning to NetGalley and I thought that a collection of short stories would be an easy one to also get back into the swing of reading with.

From the very first story this kept me gripped with the haunting beauty of the characters and the worlds they inhabited.

Such a brilliant collection of short stories I was constantly wondering what the next one would bring.

A large range of styles and tones; sci-fi, fantasy, science fantasy – a little for everyone, though I can’t imagine too many people no liking the whole collection.

The titular story is a passionate exploration of the Supreme Courts turning over of the Roe  vs. Wade case, giving a startling range of historical facts and view points along with an exploration of ‘what could be’ and is stunning in it’s passion and range.

One of my other favourites is so different in style and tone it’s almost as though it was another writer, Kiki Hernández Beats the Devil is so snappy, fun, with an awesome protagonist – I’d love a full series with her.

Then there is Strange Waters, a fisherwoman gets caught in the time currents and cannot get home to her time for her children no how hard she tries, such a sad tale with longing for her family at the core.

I’ve highlighted these three but there isn’t one story in here I couldn’t say was my favourite, each has its own strengths, all so well executed. Fabulous read from start to finish.

I got this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Due for publication on the 24th April 2026.
