The story of Animal Farm by George Orwell is well known, it follows the farm animals of the fictional Manor Farm as they rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where all animals can be equal, free, and happy away from human interventions. However, by the end of the novella, the rebellion is betrayed, and under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon, the farm ends up in a far worse state than it was before. This was a satire about the Soviet Union under Stalin’s dictatorship.
This graphic adaptation of the story still hits all the important points of Orwell’s satire in the story that is told through words but more importantly the art really gets to the depths of horror the tale imparts.
All the animals are depicted perfectly, as are the dastardly humans, emotions are vivid and clear, the gradual despotism is relayed perfectly as are the conditions that the rest of the farm animals eventually deteriorate to.
and when the pigs walk on two legs is such a great series of panels, so strong.
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others…
I can’t get over how strong an adaptation of the Orwell novella this is, and the illustrations really give it a massive emotional depth and in a way makes it easier to understand.
I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
