T Kingfisher. Titan Books, (160p) ISBN: 9781803369716. Horror, read 13/11/25, Hardback ★★★★☆
Always love a good T Kingfisher novella and I’ve been waiting for this one for a while now, the conclusion of the Sworn soldier series.
This time we find Easton (and of course, Angus) travelling to America to help his old friend from the first adventure, Dr. Denton who has a problem of a missing cousin down a deep, dark mine…
Though in my mind not as strong as the previous two stories in the series this was still a fun read.
I was expecting Mothman or the Chupacabra but really wasn’t expecting the foe that they did meet in the end.
Still playing on the humorous side of horror there is enough meat in here to keep you satisfied from start to finish.
The research to get the mine right was so important as that feeling of claustrophobia and imminent danger was so important to the mood of the story, the constant feeling of being trapped, the weight of time, the feeling of isolation. These all gave the foe some of it’s depth.
Another quick read as this is a nice slim novella but each page was used well and led the story forward at all times.
