Piers Torday. Quercus, (384p) ISBN: 9781786541437. Middle Grade, read 21/09/25, Paperback ★★★★☆
I’ve always enjoyed Piers’ books and have had this floating around for a year and with Wolf Crown coming out in October I thought it may be a good idea to read this.
In a world where immortals rule we follow the adventures of Tibor, a werewolf who is yet to fully wolf out, and his friend Roza, a vampir transformed into a dog as protection for Tibor.
Both were adopted from an orphanage at the same time by a powerful vampir lord, Baron Ambrus, and neither have knowledge of their past or why a powerful vampir lord would want to adopt them.
But this all starts to comes clear the year of Tibor’s transformation!
The night of his transformation is Spectre Night, a once a year occurrence, and the legend tells of only a werewolf born on Spectre Night can access the Midnight Treasure, a treasure of great power.
With this as a setup we go on various adventures with lots of twists and turns, revelations and secrets.
This is fast-paced and keeps your interest throughout, especially with some of the revelations of motives, little clues here and there with Tibor and Roza discovering some of them but others only we are privy to. Also the hints of other supernatural creatures outside the lands of the Vampir gives scope for world expansion.
The addition of three children in a raincoat is always welcome.
Looking forward to Wolf Crown in October.
