T Kingfisher. Orbit, (384p) ISBN: 9780356524313. Fantasy, read 14/01/26, Paperback ★★★★☆
I’d been looking at this for a while as I’m generally a fan of T Kingfisher’s work but for me I either love them or they’re a bit meh.
We took a chance on this for our first Romance Book Club book at the bookshop and I loved it, not too spicy so a great introduction for those not used to the genre, but enough to keep those interested in the developing romance. I would say along the lines of Legends & Lattes level of romantasy.
But the angst and overthinking were pure perfection.
The fantasy world we are in is full of intrigue, politics, backstabbing, rival churches, and loose heads set in a loose medieval milieu.
We join Stephen, a berserker Paladin of the Saint of Steel, the only problem is that the Saint has died and it’s Paladins are shattered and broken, Stephen helps cope with this by knitting socks.
Then there is Grace, a perfumier with a dark past, who has issues with valuing her own worth.
They meet on a dark night in unusual circumstances, and get quite close very quickly…
Poisonings, betrayal, growing passion, inability to use their words, trust issues of themselves and others, serial killers, all make for an exciting read that I didn’t want to put down and I really am looking forward to continuing the series as there seems to be a common thread that will run through them (but no spoilers).
A great angst filled, all your problems could be solved if you used your words, fantasy romance to kick the book club off with.
