Patrick Horvath. Oni Press, (72p) ISBN: 9798894880068. Graphic Novel, read 15/01/26, eBook ★★★★☆
I really enjoyed Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees and was willing to give something done by Patrick a go.
Set in a future where billionaires either have to ‘donate’ half their fortune for the greater good (for the greater good) or fight to the death in an arena, if they win they get to keep their fortune.
Otherwise both their fortune and life are lost, a win win situation for the world.
The graphic tones of this are similar to the ones used in ‘Beneath’ quite muted and cartoony which makes the splashes of bright red all the more vibrant, standing out against this calm background.
This is a story of avarice and revenge, all bound up into a coliseum-like atmosphere to please the crowds, the populace.
Making the 1%ers actually pay for their avarice, as if they weren’t greedy for it all they could just donate half of it, taking them out of the range of the lottery and doing good in the world.
But the end is more about love thwarted and a price having to be paid for it and what someone is willing to do to exact that price.
Great read, bit short but got its message across clearly.
I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
