TV Shows

To go along with the various lists of award winning TV, Film, and Music I needed a dump space for everything else that doesn’t win awards.

There is the Lack of Resolution (see pinned list) post where I look at all those favourite series that never quite finished and we were left hanging in the middle of massive story arcs (looking at you The Order, seven loose arcs!).

This one will just be a list of all the other series I’ve heard about and fancied watching, all will eventually get pages for themselves once I start watching them and then each episode will get a mini review.

Basil Dreams Big

Basil Dreams Big

Basil Dreams Big

This was another one I had to ask for through Publisher News as soon as I saw the cover, and I had already read and loved Mavis the Bravest and One Camel Called Doug, both of which were by the partnership of Lu Fraser and Sarah Warburton.

So with hopes high and a brief flick through where I completely fell in love with Basil I spent a while reading and rereading this, exploring all the pictures and finding Basil really cute and perfect as a character. I think I read it about four times and then just spent ages looking at all the pictures it is so good.

The rhyming scheme is nice and loose but is still there adding a structure to the story, making it a breeze to speak out loud.

Basil is a fruit bat who is lacking confidence in his ability to fly like the rest of the bats, no matter how much he tries PLOP! he falls to the ground and feels that nothing can help him.

But a huge storm comes along and Basil has to show bravery and resolve to help his best friend during this and overcome his fears and lack of confidence.

A beautiful story about friendship and confidence shown in both words and picture, watch out for a very determined Basil with his tongue sticking out, so so sweet!

Looking forward to trying this out in a story time!

I received this from Simon and Schuster in exchange for an honest review.

Photography - A Feminist History

Photography – A Feminist History

My personal collection of art books, sitting there on my shelves.

This used to be a little bigger but I decided a while back to concentrate more on later 19th century and onward works, particularly feminist art and photography.

Abumi-guchi

Abumi-guchi

Abumi-guchi

An abumi-guchi (鐙口, lit. “stirrup mouth”) is a strange furry yōkai, or Japanese monster, that is illustrated in Sekien Toriyama’s Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro.

It is a type of tsukumogami formed from a stirrup, usually one that once belonged to a dead soldier that fell in battle. It is said that the abumi-guchi will wait where it lies for the dead soldier to return.

Squonk

Squonk – Illustrated by Margaret R. Tryon

The squonk is a mythical creature that is reputed to live in the hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania in the United States.1

The first written account of the squonk was from the 1910 book Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods.2 His provenance was attested in the next written iteration, in the 1939 book Fearsome Critters. This book suggested that the creatures had migrated from deserts to swamps to finally settle in Pennsylvania.3 As logging camps were continuously moving in the early 20th century, this could explain their migration to Pennsylvania.4

Unlike many mythological creatures, the supposed physical characteristics of the squonk remain unchanged from the original written account, which states:

The squonk is of a very retiring disposition, generally traveling about at twilight and dusk. Because of its misfitting skin, which is covered with warts and moles, it is always unhappy…Hunters who are good at tracking are able to follow a squonk by its tear-stained trail, for the animal weeps constantly. When cornered and escape seems impossible, or when surprised and frightened, it may even dissolve itself in tears.

from William T. Cox, “The Squonk”, “Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods” (1910)5

Later retellings included that squonks were slowest on moonlit nights as they try to avoid seeing their ugly appearance in any illuminated bodies of water. In addition to warts and moles, the creatures were given webbed toes on their left feet.6

The given “species” taxonomy of the creature, Lacrimacorpus dissolvens, is made up of the Latin tear, body, and dissolve. These refer to its supposed ability to dissolve when captured.7

Solo Board Games

Solo Board Games

Solo Board Games

As we all know there has been very little chance of playing any form of social gaming during the last few years and I really needed to scratch that gaming itch again.

So over the last couple of weeks I’ve got my PS5 back out of storage (still not really played anything yet) and bought a few solo mode board games.

My main criteria for these right now is that they have to be small box games with a built-in solo mode or co-op that can be played solo, can’t be bothered searching out fan-made solo modes for games yet.

The first three I’ve got are Friday, Lux Aeterna, and One Deck Dungeon: Forest of Shadows due to this small box restriction, and due to the fact I got great deals on eBay for them, but since the first draft of this post I’ve added a few more.

I’m watching some playthroughs right now and really want to start with One Deck Dungeon, so watch out for updates on that.

I may also be able to have a 10 for 10 challenge in 2026 after setting up this area of the blog to my satisfaction (😂)

The complete list of what I want is here and will be updated as I get the game or find another I fancy and it may become a bit more refined but this will do to begin with. For a start I know there are some solo RPGs on this list and I think I’ll make a separate post for those.
