Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
This is the start of me going through the list of Disney films as a means of watching more TV and Films rather than scrolling interminably.
As soon as it started I was transported back to the time when I thought all these films were black and white at about the age of six, this just made me feel comfortable.
It’s amazing to look at this with a modern eye and seeing how dark and psychedelic these animations were in the early part of the 20th century.
I also never realised that the story was told in a lot of rhyming doublets as well as the famous songs throughout.
It’s been about 50 years since I last saw this! and the animation still really stands up, hand drawn and full of rich colours.
Never realised they foreshadowed Bambi in it!
The story is everything I remember but there is so much to disentangle from it now in the 21st Century that never got me all those years ago.
Gender politics, role delineation, use of physical attributes to describe character and mental capacity, Snow White’s general attitude to privilege, and so much more.
Never actually realised that Snow White behaved like a little girl playing mother with the Dwarfs, and quite cruel.
Even with all this I still enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
