In Search of the Last Action Heroes (2019)
I was recommended this by one of my colleagues after we talked about our love for the Last Action Hero film and 80s action films in general.
I asked if there was a certain star talking in it and the first person to speak was Cynthia Rothrock, always had a soft spot for her films.
This had so many people from the world of 80s and 80s action films talking about their memories of the period and giving their opinions on various aspects of the machine that made these films that it was always going to be a fun watch.
And it was a fun and nostalgia laden two-hour journey, and I’m probably going to have to revisit a lot of the films mentioned to see how I feel about them now, though I do have to watch Commando every now and again as it is so out there.
But like most documentaries about a large time period there will always be something missing and it all felt a bit fragmented and though there was two hours it really felt as though there could have been so much more.
Another thing that came out very clearly were the clash of personalities and how so many people felt wronged, there were lots of sly asides about people’s abilities, and lots of very poorly hidden bitterness at times.
At the end there was also a lot of what felt like old men shouting at clouds regarding action in the now(ish), which was a bit unnecessary, celebrate what was there and let us make our own minds up about the films of now.
Well worth a watch with these limitations in mind and the little bites of acid really add to a fun couple of hours which makes me want to watch another couple of 80s and 90s action films tonight.
