A History of Horror Fear & the Uncanny

I love these DK books that explore a theme, they always feel like a lot of hard work goes into them.

and they fit my nighttime reading habits perfectly, a little bit before I crash out to sleep!

Moving through different time periods and looking at the roots of horror throughout the world this is a wonderful crib sheet to the world of mythology, literature, theatre, and film.

From folklore to folk horror, sinister ghosts to constructed beasts, from Europe to Asia and beyond, the paranormal and the arts, there is a lot in here.

Full of fascinating facts and gorgeous illustrations DK continues to produce beautiful surveys of various bits of information making these styles of books perfect gateways into the subject written about.

The only issue I really had with this was not the snippet style (which I love!) but on some pages the text contrast with the colour used for the page was so low I couldn’t read it win low light in bed.

That aside if you want to know a little about a lot through history of what makes us frightened this is a great introduction.
